JoikuBoost Help
- What is JoikuBoost?
- JoikuBoost multiplies your mobile Internet speed by combining several phones' Internet connections from multiple operator 3G networks into a single larger bit pipe, accessible over Wi-Fi (WLAN). JoikuBoost client installs to your S60 phone. You can share 3G with your friends to boost up your Internet experience into a totally new level.

- View the JoikuBoost presentation here
- Is JoikuBoost free?
- JoikuBoost Beta 0.1 is offered as a free download exclusively at www.joiku.com. We hope you will give us loads of valuable feedback that we will use to finalize the solution. Please note that your operator will charge you, naturally, for the data transferred when you surf the Internet using JoikuBoost. We highly recommend that you get a flat rate data plan from your operator. As Beta is beta level software you should use the software at your own risk.
- What devices does JoikuBoost support?
- JoikuBoost software client installs and works in Nokia S60 3rd Edition (e.g. N95, Nokia E90) and S60 5th Edition (e.g. Nokia 5800 XM, N97) devices. Device must have Wi-Fi and 3G support. Joikusoft has not fully tested the Beta edition against all 3rd Edition and 5th Edition devices. Please report any compatibility issues to us at boost(at)joikusoft.com. Please view the complete list of initially supported devices at www.joiku.com.
- Does JoikuBoost work on Maemo, iPhone or Google Android platforms?
- Currently JoikuBoost works only on Nokia S60 3rd Edition and S60 5th Edition devices.
- My phone's firmware is old or I have never updated it. Should I update it now?
- Please update your phone's firmware with Nokia Software Updater in order to have high quality WLAN drivers in your phone for JoikuBoost to make use of.
- My laptop is quite old. Does it work with JoikuBoost?
- Typically yes if your laptop just has a standard Wi-Fi card. Some older IBM and Lenovo laptop models are not compatible with JoikuBoost. Their Wi-Fi chipsets are not fully compatible with Nokia phones.
- I have connected two phones with JoikuBoost Beta 0.1. How should I notice the difference in download speed?
- JoikuBoost uses a new communications protocol developed by Joikusoft Ltd. In the current Beta version the "Boosting effect" can be seen most clearly when downloading large multiple files simultaneously with two or three phones. The "Boosting effect" requires 10-20 seconds from the moment when download starts to take effect. Different speed test sites in the Internet will not give correct figures because their download test period is too short. Try downloading larger files and let us know your results. Easiest way to do this is to post a note to Joiku.com discussion forums at www.joiku.com. Your JoikuBoost phone (in Beta stage the "master client" which connects other Booster phones) will also display the current speed of your connection.
- I'm using many applications like web browsing and VoIP calls through Wi-Fi in my phone. Should they work simultaneously with JoikuBoost?
- Before starting JoikuBoost make sure there are NO other applications using Wi-Fi in your phone at the same time. Otherwise JoikuBoost application will not start. You can see your phone's Wi-Fi availability on Tools - Connectivity - Connection manager.
- When will the final edition be available? Is it also free?
- We will inform at Joiku community site when the JoikuBoost production release is available. Please register to Joiku (at the main page of www.joiku.com) to receive the Joiku-Update of JoikuBoost production release availability. Most probably some sort of small payment will be applied to the final version. During Beta phase we also welcome suggestions for optimal product pricing. We are a small, innovative software developer and most of our income comes from JoikuSpot and JoikuBoost licenses. By purchasing a license you support our work and enable this way good support functions, a continuous development of future innovative products, and broadening the product compatibilities for latest devices.
- What is the difference between JoikuSpot and JoikuBoost?
- JoikuSpot allows you to share your 3G over Wi-Fi from a single phone, making use of a single 3G Internet connection. JoikuSpot as a standalone internet solution is much faster than Bluetooth connections (as JoikuSpot uses Wi-Fi as a bearer) and it compares favourably with USB modem connections as well. JoikuBoost extends JoikuSpot's features. It connects together the 3G Internet connections of several phones and creates this way one, larger internet bit pipe with higher internet connection speed.
- Is JoikuBoost faster than JoikuSpot?
- Yes, if you boost i.e. connect several phones to JoikuBoost at the same time. If you use JoikuBoost as a standalone Wi-Fi share client with one phone, then the speed is roughly the same as with JoikuSpot (Premium).
- As a JoikuSpot user, why should I use JoikuBoost?
- The 3G Internet connection speed promised by operators typically deviates quite a bit from the actual speed you get. You may have subscribed to 2Mbs mobile broadband for example, but in reality you are given less than a megabyte of 3G bandwidth. With JoikuBoost you can achieve more bandwidth as the internet traffic routes via several 3G networks using JoikuBoost protocol.
- Will my JoikuSpot Premium license work for JoikuBoost?
- JoikuBoost Beta is freeware and does not require a license. JoikuBoost commercial edition will require a separate licence.
- What does ACTUAL speed mean?
- Actual speed means the real throughput that you can get from a web page down to your computer and vice versa. It is typical for mobile Internet that the speed is totally different than the maximum (theoretical) speed advertised by operators.
- What does kbps (Kbit/s) and kB/s (Kbytes/s) mean?
- Eight bits are one byte. Operators typically announce the connection speed in bits (3.6 Mbit/s) e.g.). However your web browser typically shows bytes (Downloading 450 kB/s e.g.).
- How will I know the actual speed of my JoikuBoost?
- Your actual internet speed is shown on the JoikuBoost application display that hosts the local JoikuBoost network.
- What are the known issues in JoikuBoost Beta?
- JoikuBoost Beta 0.1 really is a beta, so there may be bugs. One known issue is that if the phone hosting the local JoikuBoost network leaves, the rest of the network will jam. See JoikuBoost discussion forums for more details. Also, the shared total speed is only shown at the host client of JoikuBoost session. Furthermore, Joikusoft has not fully tested the JoikuBoost compatibility across all device models, and specifically, in different operator networks across the world.
- Where can I get JoikuBoost Beta?
- You can download the JoikuBoost Beta exclusively at www.joiku.com.
- Where can I get support for JoikuBoost?
- www.joiku.com -> Discussion forums and JoikuBoost Help
- Where can I find documentation of JoikuBoost?
- www.joiku.com (JoikuBoost Help) and www.joikusoft.com.
- How many Boosters can I connect with my JoikuBoost?
- In our lab environment we have successfully connected five JoikuBoost clients so far. If you manage to have more, please let us know.
- What devices can I connect to the Internet via JoikuBoost and how?
- Laptops, other phones with Wi-Fi - basically any Wi-Fi device supporting WLAN ad hoc networks will do. Please note that Sony PSP and Nintendo DS do not support WLAN ad hoc networks for internet connection.
- Will JoikuBoost support other platforms than Symbian?
- In the future most probably yes.
- Is using JoikuBoost secure? How?
- Using JoikuBoost is secure. Just set the encryption on. Please see JoikuBoost help documents for details. We also plan to implement "buddy lists" to JoikuBoost to allow instant 3G peering with friends.
- What kind of increase can I get to my internet speed with JoikuBoost?
- JoikuBoost multiplexes several phones' mobile data connections together over Wi-Fi. The increase in speed depends from the data connection speeds of the phones which participate the local JoikuBoost network. Typically two phones should give you about 1,6x speed compared to a situation where only one phone is used. In our lab environment we gained 3.4X speed by connecting 4 JoikuBoost phones.
- How can I get notified when JoikuBoost production release ships?
- Register at www.joiku.com and opt in for e-mail based Joiku-updates.
